Let the butlers and women of Ribeira dress up and put on their best gold, the pride of a ‘chieira’ that only Viana do Castelo has meaning for.
Let the fishermen prepare their shirts and flowers to decorate their boats.
Let the floats be embellished. It’s time to dye the salt for the longest and most beautiful night of the year, to finalise the floats and load the drums.
The time is approaching when the firecrackers will once again echo throughout the region, announcing, to the sound of our drums and the unrivalled euphoria of the gigantones and cabeçudos, that the Pilgrimage of Senhora d’Agonia is back.
Now it’s finally time to go back to Viana and experience the festival, the patron saint and the tradition, as we used to do year after year. Portugal’s biggest pilgrimage is back.
There will be five days and a programme with around 45 moments of live festivities.
The programme for the Senhora d’Agonia Pilgrimage begins on 6 August, with the highlight taking place from 17 to 21 August, and can also be followed on the website www.festasdagonia.com, social networks, radio and television.
WE ARE ALL PILGRIMAGES.
