You know about Porto’s São João. But there is a third celebration in northern Portugal that draws over a million people every August — and almost no international visitor has ever planned around it.

The Agonia Festival in Viana do Castelo. is Portugal’s largest pilgrimage: nine days of religious processions, historic costume parades, salt-and-flower street carpets, fireworks over the Lima River and live music at the marina. It has been running since 1772. It is extraordinary in scale, entirely authentic in character, and almost completely off the international tourism radar.

That is changing fast. Here is everything you need to know to be there in 2026.

Dates: 15 to 23 August 2026

The 2026 edition of the Agonia Festival runs for nine consecutive days from 15 to 23 August. Symbolic opening events begin on 7 August with the Street Exhibition and the XXIV Handicrafts Fair in the Jardim Público, but the major set pieces concentrate in the final week.

If you can only come for a few days, the weekend of 19–20 August is the unmissable window: the Mordomia Parade on the 19th and the Solemn Procession to the Sea on the 20th are the two most spectacular events of the entire festival.

The 2026 programme: what not to miss

Festa do Traje — 18 August

An evening dedicated to the display of Viana’s traditional costume and gold — the lavradeira dress, the filigree jewellery, the embroidered aprons. Held at the Centro Cultural, it is a more intimate introduction to the tradition before the spectacle of the parade the following day.

The Mordomia Parade — 19 August

The headline event. Hundreds of women from the Minho region dressed in the traditional costumes of their village or family, wearing genuine gold jewellery that has been handed down through generations. They walk through the city streets with a pride that is completely uncontrived. No photograph fully prepares you for seeing it in person. Nothing quite like it exists elsewhere in Europe.

The Solemn Procession to the Sea — 20 August

The image of Our Lady of Agony leaves her sanctuary in solemn procession at 2:30 pm, carried through the streets of the Ribeira, which have been decorated overnight with intricate carpets of salt and flowers. At the Lima River, more than a hundred decorated boats receive the image and escort it out to sea in the Procissão ao Mar. The Fogo da Santa — the fireworks display that follows — illuminates the riverside from the Eiffel Bridge to the Santa Luzia Sanctuary.

Romaria dos Pequeninos — 21 August

Dedicated spaces for children and families to experience the traditions of Viana firsthand. The most family-friendly day of the entire programme — if you are travelling with children, plan your arrival for this date.

The Historical-Ethnographic Parade — 22 August

Over 3,000 participants recreate centuries of history from Viana do Castelo and the Minho region in a procession through the city centre, complete with floats, folk groups and brass bands. The day ends with fireworks — the Serenata — which closes the 2026 edition on the night of the 23rd.

Why international visitors keep missing it — and why that is changing

The Agonia Festival attracts over a million visitors every August, almost all Portuguese or Spanish. International travellers who stumble upon it consistently describe it as one of the most remarkable experiences of their time in Portugal — but very few plan around it deliberately.

With Viana do Castelo’s growing profile as a surf destination and the city’s recognition as European Sports City for 2026, that is changing.
