Viana do Castelo. will host, in the coming weeks, two world sailing championships that will bring around 800 athletes from 52 countries on five continents to the city.
From June 22nd to 30th, the ILCA4 Youth World Championships will feature around 430 athletes, including 280 men and 150 women, accompanied by around 150 coaches. The championship includes the ILCA 4 Men’s and ILCA 4 Women’s classes, training classes that are the first step for athletes who want to be Olympic athletes.
Then, from the 1st to the 8th of July, the ILCA U21 World Championships integrates the ILCA 6 Women’s and ILCA 7 Men’s Olympic classes, and the event will select athletes for the 2028 Olympics. Around 240 athletes will participate in this championship, between 160 men and 80 women accompanied by around 100 coaches.
A Viana do Castelo. Sailing Club and the Capable Planet Clube Náutico are the organizing entities, with the support of the Viana do Castelo. City Council and several partners.
Mário Quina, President of the Portuguese Sailing Federation (FPV), said he believes that these events “will be a success” especially because Viana do Castelo. “has a long-standing tradition in organizing reference events”, indicating that sailors “will have all the necessary conditions” in the city of Viennese.
