The Gil Eannes Hospital Ship
A maritime and historical journey
Discover the legacy of the Gil Eannes
The Gil Eannes Hospital Ship, built at the Viana do Castelo Shipyards, is a floating treasure, anchored in the Foz do Lima.
Hospital of the seas
Cod origins
In 1955, the Gil Eannes began its mission as a floating hospital. For decades, it looked after the fishermen of the Portuguese cod fleet on the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland.
Abandonment and rescue
Once the cod fleet was decommissioned, the ship was abandoned in Lisbon docks. In 1998, the Gil Eannes Foundation rescued it from the scrapyard for around 250,000 euros. A campaign united the entire Viana do Castelo community in this unprecedented effort.
