Viana Do Castelo Natural Geopark
Discover the Viana do Castelo Coastal Geopark, a place to travel back in time and learn about the history of planet Earth over 500 million years ago.
This geopark covers more than 320 km² and was created in 2017 after more than a decade of work to inventory the county’s geological heritage.
Since September 2017, the Viana do Castelo Coastal Geopark has been recognized by UNESCO’s Portuguese Geoparks Forum as an aspiring member of the global network.
It has 13 areas classified as Natural Monuments. Some of the ones you can (and should) explore include Canto Marinho, Alcantilado de Montedor, Cascatas da Ferida Má and Campo Mineiro de Meixedo-Vila Mou.
Each of these sites offers a unique insight into Portugal’s rich geological history.
The Geopark is also a rich territory from the point of view of Natural and Cultural Heritage, with around 4,800 hectares specifically designated for the protection of fauna and flora habitats.
Visiting the Viana do Castelo Coastal Geopark is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the geological history of our planet and enjoy the natural beauty of Viana do Castelo.
