It was on water that the Portuguese discovered and conquered the world. It was the sea that marked Portugal out in one of the most important chapters of history and it is the sea that embraces this country and presents it with magnificent landscapes.
Viana do Castelo
Years ago it took part in the Portuguese Discoveries and, hundreds of years later, in cod fishing, and its connection to the sea is part of the tradition of its people. Today, the connection isn’t made on ships or with fishing nets alone; the adventure of discovery has been transformed, opening up to diving boards and goggles.
There is no shortage of beaches in this city, but to the south of the mouth of the River Lima, Praia do Cabedelo is the favourite of the inhabitants of Viana do Castelo. Surrounded by dunes and a pine forest where two campsites are located, this beautiful half-moon-shaped beach is one of the most popular in the region, being divided into two areas it gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy it in different ways and can satisfy different expectations and tastes. On the north side of the pontoon, with strong winds, it’s perfect for water sports and is the stage for several international competitions. Surfers, windsurfers and bodyboarders frequent it regularly, finding the perfect swell during the day and entertainment at night in the many bars along the sand. On the south side there is a second beach with extensive dunes and clear waters, the perfect place for family days out and for children to enjoy a peaceful day in the sun.
Cabedelo satisfies the most demanding and while in the water a variety of activities can be done, from surfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing or even diving, on land you can be sure that every effort is made to make the experience the best it can be:
- Blue Flag;
- Security or surveillance;
- Awning/sunshade hire;
- Light boat hire;
- Showers;
- Car park;
- Bar;
- Restaurant;
But if waves and salty waters aren’t your thing, don’t worry, the Lima River opens up other options and you’ll leave just as happy and eager to return, whether you’re on a boat/canoe, sailing, rowing or canoeing, or even at high speed on a jet-ski.
