The Evaluation Commission of the Association of European Capitals and Cities of Sport (ACES Europe) today officialised Viana do Castelo as a European City of Sport for 2023.

The President of ACES Europe said that the candidature was “very strong” and that ” Viana do Castelo has the fantastic possibility of hosting sports of all kinds, thanks to the sea, the river and the existing infrastructures”.
The representative also emphasised that “this is a city that is committed to sport, that loves sport”.
Viana do Castelo has various sports facilities, but the “jewels in the crown” of the municipality are the:
- High Performance Surfing Centre;
- Canoeing Centre;
- Rowing Centre;
- Sailing Centre.
As the European City of Sport 2023, Viana do Castelo aims to encourage pleasure in exercise, determination to achieve, community spirit, learning fair play and improving the health of the community.
