Portugal’s surf reputation is built on Ericeira, Peniche and Nazaré. All three are excellent. All three are also increasingly crowded, expensive in peak season and saturated with surf tourism that can make them feel more like surf theme parks than actual breaks.
Cabedelo, at the mouth of the Lima River in Viana do Castelo., is what those spots were before everyone found out about them. And in 2026, with Viana recognised as European Sports City of the Year, the infrastructure around the water has never been better — while the line-ups remain, for now, refreshingly uncrowded.
The wave: what to expect in 2026
- Beach break with the best peaks in the northern section, close to the jetty — long, hollow waves with barrel sections on better swells.
- Works across all tides; best at mid to low tide.
- Consistent North Atlantic swell year-round — one of the most reliable coastlines in Europe.
- Morning sessions are cleaner. The nortada (north wind) creates onshore conditions by mid-afternoon.
- Intermediate to advanced. The southern section is more forgiving for beginners.
For kitesurfers and windsurfers: the southern stretch of the beach, in the wind shadow of the river mouth, is one of the premier spots in northern Portugal when the nortada is fully established. International competitions in both disciplines are held here annually.

Viana do Castelo: European Sports City 2023
In 2023, Viana do Castelo holds the title of European Sports City — a recognition that reflects the city’s long-standing commitment to active tourism, its world-class surf infrastructure and its track record of hosting international competitions across multiple disciplines.
The Surf Clube de Viana, one of Portugal’s oldest and most established surf clubs (founded over 35 years ago), manages the Centre for High Performance Surfing at Cabedelo Beach. The centre trains competitive athletes and hosts international events. Viana do Castelo has held the presidency of the World Surf Cities Network since 2023.
This is a city that takes surf seriously at every level — from the elite training programmes to the surf schools for beginners operating directly on the beach.
