The Viana do Castelo Urban Ecological Park, which fully opened to the public precisely three years ago, corresponds to a natural space, measuring around 20 hectares, located east of the historic center and west of the Eiffel Bridge. It is located around the water mirror provided by the Azenhas de D. Prior caldera and is an integral part of the Lima river estuary, which extended an arm into its right bank, being an area of high interest and environmental sensitivity.
PEUVC is part of the Portuguese Network of Biodiversity Stations and is the first Halophyte Park in Portugal. It is an important coastal wetland, fed daily by brackish tidal water and fresh water from the S. Vicente stream, making it a true biological ‘hotspot’ in the city of Viana do Castelo. In this location, visitors can enjoy the different leisure spaces and equipment, always in contact with nature.
In the Park, 227 species of animals, 136 species of plants, 31 species of macrofungi and lichens and 5 Iberian endemics were identified.
The PEUVC is available to visit free of charge from Tuesday to Sunday, it is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm from March 21st to September 20th and from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from September 21st to March 20th.
