The Eiffel Bridge over the River Lima is one of the most emblematic images of the city of Viana do Castelo. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, it is a symbol of iron architecture in Portugal.
It measures around 645 meters in length and was considered a monumental work at the time.
It is made up of two metal decks, the upper one for road traffic and pedestrians, and the lower one for the railway.
railway, which are 562 meters long and 8 meters wide.
Inaugurated in 1878, the metal bridge was designed by the Eiffel House in Paris and replaced the wooden bridge that connected the then terreiro de São Bento to the left bank of the river Lima, next to the chapel of São Lourenço, in the parish of Darque.
After advances and setbacks, changes in location and various theories, the project for the new bridge was drawn up, requiring more than two thousand tons of iron to build.
