The Sá de Miranda Municipal Theatre is a landmark cultural icon in the city.
It was inaugurated on 29 April 1885 and was designed by José Geraldo da Silva Sardinha.
Its Main Hall is made up of an emblematic “Italian-style” nave that leads to a stage elegantly framed by a majestic proscenium arch.
The theatre’s ceiling, painted by João Baptista do Rio, depicts a sky with portraits of playwrights William Shakespeare, Gil Vicente, Molière, Pierre Corneille, Calderón de la Barca, Almeida Garrett, Friedrich Schiller and Vittorio Alfieri.
The Sá de Miranda Municipal Theatre is a must-see in Viana do Castelo’s cultural scene.
