Montedor’s windmills look like something out of a dream. In Montedor, in the municipality of Viana do Castelo, you’ll find one of the most beautiful and well-preserved mills in Portugal.
They arose as a result of the local cereal wealth. In this museum centre you can visit the only windmill with trapezoidal wooden sails in Portugal: the Marinheiro windmill.
There are other examples that have been restored and are still in operation, such as the Cima windmill, dating from 1835. With its cloth sails, this mill is home to the information centre. As well as providing help and advice to visitors, this space offers tastings of local products by appointment.
A visit to the Montedor Lighthouse is a must, if it wasn’t the northernmost lighthouse on the Portuguese mainland coast, 28 metres high.
To round off the tour, there’s nothing like walking along the footpaths between the Montedor Windmills and the Paço Fort and discovering the region’s rich landscape and archaeology.
