Through a protocol approved at an ordinary executive meeting, Viana do Castelo City Council has guaranteed the world premiere of the animated film “Viana – The Legend of the Golden Hearts” in the city. The world premiere will be attended by the actors from the cast, as well as musical artists and well-known personalities from the sector.
Voiced by Daniela Melchior (Ana), Luke Newton (Thomas) and Pêpê Rapazote (Don Florentin, General), the Portuguese animated film mixes adventure, comedy, romance and music and is inspired by the love legend of Viana do Castelo.
The film is produced by Rui Lima Miranda, with executive production by André Picado and direction by Rodrigo Carvalho.
English actor Luke Newton, known for his role in the Netflix series “Bridgerton”, voices Thomas, a Portuguese guitar craftsman who falls in love with Princess Ana, played by Daniela Melchior.
“A 3D animated film inspired by the traditions, architecture and customs of Viana do Castelo, for children and families, which will premiere in July 2025”, featuring “an international cast of award-winning actors with enormous popularity”.
“The story takes us to the north of medieval Portugal, where the beautiful Ana falls in love with the poor craftsman Thomas. The story of an impossible love, because her father demands that his daughter’s suitors present a jewel as proof of nobility. But the young couple refuse to give up. With the help of their faithful companions, the generosity of the town’s women and the talent of a mysterious jeweller, Ana and Thomas will face many challenges for love, including the powerful and evil Duke of Aragon,” says the synopsis.
The animation produced by Watermelon has a budget of 10 million euros and is supported by the Tourism and Cinema Support Fund and the Cinema and Audiovisual Institute (ICA). Lasting 100 minutes, “Viana – The Legend of the Golden Hearts” is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2025.
